Management Specialist (CSMSSM)
is a title or designation awarded by
Safety Center Incorporated’s
Professional Safety Institute to
individuals who:
- Meet the
standards for a Certified Safety
Management Specialist as established
by Safety Center Incorporated.
- Complete the
entire Safety Specialist
Certification Series and
successfully sit for the
certification exam.
The certification
program will begin in the fall of 2008.

The Professional Safety Institute was founded in 1996.
Since its inception, the Professional Safety Institute has
graduated over 650 Safety Specialist in both the public and private
sectors. The institute was founded on
the principle that occupational health & safety is a dynamic field
of study with continuous industry, regulatory, technological and legal
changes. Safety Professionals must be current in the technical and
management aspect of their profession in order to maintain safe employees
and workplaces as well as stay within regulatory compliance. |

The Professional Safety Institute courses may
be taken individually or as part of certificated programs.
Courses
are designed for safety neophytes and for the seasoned safety
professional. Institute courses are not designed to compete with
government required technical courses; rather, they are designed to aid
students in the creation of effective safety programs at their workplaces.
Most importantly, students gain career skills and an excellent
addition to professional resumes through graduation from the Professional
Safety Institute. |

The Core, Technical and Management certificates involve three, one-day
classes that are held two to four times per year on a rotating basis. The
Instructor Certificate Course is a single, three-day class held twice a
year. Students are strongly encouraged to take these courses in order as
each level builds upon skills acquire in prior sessions. If you have

Upon completion of the Safety Specialist Certificate, students will be
able to: |

Understand principles of safety, risk
control and industrial hygiene.

Implement effective safety & health programs
to fit any management style.

Communicate safety
information with measured confidence to groups and
in one-on-one conversations.

|
|
Students
receive a certificate of completion fore each level-Core, Technical,
Management and Instructor. Each Individual course certificate includes 0.6
continuing education units (CEUs). Upon completion of the Safety
Specialist Certificate class series, graduates receive a handsome plaque.

|

This is the foundation course for the Safety Specialist Certificate.
In this course, students gain basic knowledge in the techniques and tools
used most often by safety professionals. The information provided can be
used immediately on a daily basis back on the job.
|
|
The course is designed
to assist the safety specialist in implementing successful occupational
safety and health programs. Developing and implementing new safety
programs, maintaining their effectiveness, regulatory compliance and
obtaining management, supervisory and employee buy-in requires a
great deal of the Safety Specialist's time. This course teaches
students how to use that time effectively. |

Course curriculum includes discussions on: |

The course also includes mini-sessions on
specific safety topics. Topic include: personal workspace safety;
illumination; hand safety; slips, trips and falls; back injury
prevention and materials handling; repetitive strain injuries; fire
extinguishers; lock-out/block-out/tag-out; ground fault circuit
interrupters (GFCIs); manual and portable power tools; Cal/OSHA
hazard correction priorities; machine guarding; personal protective
equipment (PPE) and housekeeping. |

Students are strongly encouraged to
take Establishing a Successful Safety Program or Selling
Safety before taking any other Professional Safety Institute
course. |

This is a one-day survey course of technical topics. Students will
leave this course with a practical understanding of how to directly apply
the information in their work environment. This course reviews the major
stressors that comprise the field of Industrial Hygiene including
chemical, physical and biological stressors. The course is presented in a
highly interactive format utilizing audiovisual tools. Solutions will be
