Develops Safe Teen Driving Attitudes

Did you know?

  • Car crashes are the #1 cause of teen fatalities
  • 16 year olds are 3 times more likely to be in an a crash*
  • Teens “at fault” in 68% of crashes with 16-19 year old drivers*

*National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

What teens say about Alive at 25 traffic safety classes:

  • “It makes you understand how fragile life is”
  • “I will be more vocal when my friends do not drive safely”
  • "It gives you a reality check."

Alive at 25 is a 4-hour class that covers:

  • Risk taking behavior discusses teen driving attitudes that lead to risk taking and under estimating the dangers in hazardous driving situations
  • Recognizing hazards speeding, alcohol/drug use, passengers, distracted driving, fatigue, tailgating, peer pressure and road/traffic conditions are involved in most teen car crashes
  • Dangerous driving situationsdiscusses consequences for “what if” scenarios and developing strategies for passengers and teen driver safety
  • Role play practices avoiding the hazards of situations involving peer pressure and other hazards so that teens drive safely

About the Alive At 25 Teen Program:

Many teen traffic safety programs focus on creating an awareness of what needs to change. Alive at 25 goes one step further and helps teens look at the underlying attitudes and behavior that contribute to the high rate of fatalities and teaches them how to make safe, responsible teen driving decisions.

Alive at 25 does not show shocking videos that could obscure its traffic safety message and instead it shows video clips where teens can see how their behavior creates dangerous driving situations. Group activities help teens identify situations that could put them at risk as a driver or a passenger, think through the consequences of their actions and use the defensive driving approach to develop the attitudes and skills for making better choices in the future.

The National Safety Council developed this program because of the high number of teen traffic fatalities and over 900 teens have completed Safety Center’s Alive at 25.

The cost of the program covers the class, a certificate of completion from the National Safety Council and an Alive at 25 workbook. enroll...

Tools for Parents to Develop Safe Teen Drivers

Did you know?

  • 78% of fatal crashes with 16-year-old drivers are due to inexperience & immaturity – National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

  • 89% of teens feel their parents are influential in encouraging safer driving – Allstate Foundation

What parents say about Alive at 25 Parent Program classes:

Safety Center Teen Safety Programs - Alive At 25 Parent Program - teen driving safety classeslearned from other parents’ perspectives/ experience…”  “practical information geared toward safety and protection…” “reflect on my own habits…”  “be patient and follow through on (with) consequences...”

Alive at 25 Parent Program is a 3-hour class that covers:

  • Unique risks teens face - peer pressure, distractions, speeding
  • Role model demonstrating safe driving behavior & attitudes
  • Driving skills checklist teaching defensive driving techniques for different traffic and road conditions as teens gain experience
  • Parent/Teen Contract - setting expectations and consequences to help teens earn driving independence

About the Alive At 25 Parent Program:

Alive at 25 Parent Program helps parents develop safe teen drivers. Research has shown that first year licensed drivers are the worst for car crashes because of inexperience and immature decision-making. Dangers for teen drivers include risky behaviors such as speeding and tailgating, underestimating the danger of driver distractions and failing to recognize and respond to hazardous situations.

Parents should continue to coach teens so they develop complex defensive driving skills including scanning for threats and developing “what if” strategies for adverse traffic, road and weather conditions. In the Parent Program, parents share how they establish clear expectations, enforce Provisional License Restrictions and let young people earn teen driving privileges.

The National Safety Council developed this program because parents play a critical role in demonstrating safe driving habits and reinforcing responsible safe teen driving behavior.

The cost of this program covers the class, a certificate of completion from the National Safety Council and an Alive At 25 Parent Program course guide.
