Teen Driving Simulator

FOCUSimulator driving class for teen drivers

Teens Get Realistic “Behind the Wheel” Experience

Did you know?

Lessons on a driving simulator can improve teen driver safety by reducing crashes for first year drivers by 66%  Center for Disease Control

Teen driving simulator reduces car crashes

“Instruction behind the wheel was nerve-racking. It’s a little more calm in the simulator because you know if you make a mistake, it’s OK.”

FOCUSimulator program has four 1-hour sessions that cover:

  • Recognizing hazards – reinforces scanning skills and processing progressively more complex traffic conditions to identify potential threats to teen driving safety
  • Avoiding collisions  requires evaluating risks and knowing how to change their speed, distance and lane positions for safe teen driving in different situations
  • Response time teen drivers repeat lessons to develop defensive driving skills so they can adjust quickly and correctly in adverse conditions

77% of teen fatalities in the first year of driving are caused by driver error due to lack of experience. Teen driving errors include driving too fast for traffic, road and weather conditions; failing to process and/or perceive hazards in time to avoid a crash; underestimating the risk and overestimating their ability to react to threats; and taking risks due to overconfidence because nothing has happened yet. Driving simulators help teens drive safely by developing defensive driving skills in an environment where they are not putting themselves or others at risk.
